While you were crumpling up your losing lottery tickets, tons of little Marvel fans showed up at Meltdown Comics and The Nerdist Theater to experience the new Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon a day before it premiered on Disney XD.
Before the screening, fans lined up for autographs from Jeph Loeb, Paul Dini, Steven T Seagle, Duncan Rouleau, Clark Gregg, and Misty Lee. In the theater, kids crammed their mouths full of spidey-themed cupcakes while they watched the show. Of course, the kids didn’t have the time to mind their manors. There was a giant cartoon projected on the wall. They lifted their frosted treats up towards their mouths and hoped for the best. Yet, hope was rarely enough. I saw plenty of icing covered noses and chins.
After the credits, fans were treated to a Q&A with the previously acknowledged group. As if this wasn’t enough, everyone stopped for photos with the web-slinging superhero himself as they made their exit. It was nice of the guy to take a break from fighting crime and entertain the kids. Nice–but irresponsible. Crime doesn’t take a break, Parker.
I’m not exactly Disney’s target audience member, but the show was pretty good. If you’re a Spider-Man dude guy bro… Sorry. I got stuck in what scientists call a “broski spiral,” which is a serious condition affecting men nationwide. Anyway, if you’re a Spider-Man fan, check out new episodes of Ultimate Spider-Man at 11:00AM, Sunday mornings on Disney XD.
Just another day at The Nerdist Theater at Meltdown Comics. Won’t you join us sometime?

“The country’s premier underground cartoonist.” —Newsweek
Throughout his twenty-five-year career, Daniel Clowes has always been ahead of artistic and cultural movements. In the late 1980s and 1990s his ground breaking comic-book series Eightball defined the indie aesthetic of alternative comics, with wit, venom, and even a little sympathy. His breakthrough success, Ghost World, convinced mainstream readers of comics’ literary potential. In the new millennium, with works such as Ice Haven, Wilson, Mister Wonderful, and The Death-Ray, Clowes has redefined the graphic novel as an art form. Continue reading »
