We want the hottest, jammed packed crowd possible for our comedian debutants at this coming out party (strained analogy, we know) so we’re setting ticket prices at five dollars, a bargain!
This Friday, a favorite of ours, Set List, returns to the theater! Set List is a rare opportunity to see some of your favorite stand-ups improvise a set in the moment with nothing more than non-sequitur phrases that they only see once take the stage! (Audience members even have the opportunity to give ideas of their own that are drawn randomly by the comics at the end of their sets). The stellar lineup includes:

Carlos Alazraqui

Wil Anderson

Matt Kirshen

Rick Overton

Kira Soltanovich

Ron Zimmerman

Kumail Nanjiani (who made this video with the Set List folks)

Ben Gleib

Pretty great, right? Set List is also notorious for having unbelievable drop-ins, as well. (Past drop-ins at NerdMelt Set List shows include Drew Carey and Roseanne Barr!) If you’ve yet to experience Set List, now is your chance! Tickets are eight dollars online, ten at the door.

Hello, and welcome to Geek Prodding. A series of questions and essays to prod the geeks in your life. This week we take a look at the Ghostbusters: Force for good or paranormal kidnappers?

Imagine if you will that you have just undergone one of the worst traumatic events in your life, neigh, the greatest traumatic event ever. You died. Now instead of pearly gates, bad harp playing, and answers to all your questions you’re stuck on earth. A spirit unable to feel or touch your surroundings. Now what would you do in this situation? Go to your family and friends and let them know you’re alright? Well you can’t because what ever happened to you has left you hideously deformed. Your skin is translucent and you can only speak in garbled tones. Maybe if you’re lucky you can get out a solid moan, but not much else. Should you hide because you’re so hideously disfigured? Should you seek help? What do you do?

After you settle down and have come to grips with your situation you decide to float around for a bit and enjoy some of the freedom of being newly dead. No more taxes, don’t have to eat, and you can go through walls. That’s a bonus. Sure a lot of your higher brain functions are removed but you were only using them to watch Jersey Shore, no big loss there. Finally you’ve found a touch of peace. No more hunger, no more sickness, and on top of that you get to scare folks and pull minor pranks for the rest of eternity. Not a bad gig.

Every now and then you hear the people you’re “living” with talk about something in the house that’s “not right”. They talk about calling someone. A professional they say. You think ‘I’ve been here awhile and I haven’t noticed anything. I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for whatever they think it is.’

One day, without warning, four men burst through the door in grey jumpsuits with flashing backpacks. No one questions you; they just shoot you with this energy beam and force you into a small box. What just happened?! They take you from this little box and put into what equates to general population at the State Prison. The little box would have been fine but now you’re in this new area filled to the brim with violent dangerous people and nary a guard or warden in sight. There are other “people” in the same situation here, some good, and some very bad. It looks like some form of hell. Floating islands of rock, Dark swirling clouds, evil “people” waiting to prey on you, no one to help you, and worst of all no one to answer your questions. “What did I do to deserve this?”

This is a typical case for the Ghostbusters. One of many they get each day. A small ghost flies through your house, not hurting anyone, so you call the Ghostbusters and they’re gone. Good riddance to that minor annoyance. Right?

Let me ask you, would you throw a criminal convicted of graffiti into the same prison with murderers and rapist for life; and with no trial? Nothing and now he’s forced to spend all eternity with these degenerates. Isn’t it the Ghostbusters job to help these souls move on to “the other side”? Is it the ghost fault they weren’t properly processed? That someone from up above is slacking on his duties.

While I agree the Ghostbusters perform a needed service by ridding the world of truly evil spirits is it fair to put them in with the minor annoying ghost? Ask yourself this next time you call the Ghostbusters, Who’s this ghost really hurting? Maybe then you’ll see that you ain’t afraid of no ghost and grow just a bit.

Sprawling across an epic landscape of deserts, harems, and modern industrial clutter, HABIBI tells the tale of Dodola and Zam, refugee child slaves bound to each other by chance, circumstance, and love. We follow them as their lives unfold together and apart; as they struggle to make a place for themselves in a world fueled by fear and greed.

At once contemporary and timeless, HABIBI gives us a love story of astounding resonance; a parable about our relationship to the natural world, the cultural divide between the first and third worlds, the common heritage of Christianity and Islam, and the magic of storytelling.

About the author:
Craig Thompson was born in Michigan in 1975, and grew up in a rural farming community in central Wisconsin. His graphic novel Blankets won numerous industry awards and has been published in nearly twenty languages. Thompson lives in Portland, Oregon.
